What is a cost projection?

Future care estimation for reserve setting

A Cost Projection provides an estimation of future care costs where medical issues are well defined, prognosis is clear, and a comprehensive life care plan is not required.

This report type is particularly valuable when counsel needs a reliable future care cost estimate without the scope and timeline of a full life care plan. It is grounded in a standardized methodology and prepared by the same Certified Life Care Planners who produce our comprehensive reports.

CBA is one of the first firms in Canada certified in the Cost Projection methodology by the International Commission on Health Care Certification (ICHCC), ensuring our approach meets the highest international standards for this report type.

When is a cost projection appropriate?

Commonly used in these scenarios

A Cost Projection is the right report type when the clinical picture is clear and the matter calls for focused, efficient quantification.

Non-catastrophic injuries

Soft tissue injuries, fractures, chronic pain, and other injuries with well-defined treatment pathways and predictable prognosis.

Less complex disputes

Matters where future care needs are limited in scope, the medical issues are clearly documented, and an estimation will serve counsel's needs.

Reserve setting

Insurers and defence counsel requiring a reliable cost estimate for claim reserve purposes, where a full life care plan would exceed what the matter requires.

Early resolution

Pre-litigation settlements, mediation preparation, and matters where both parties seek to resolve future care damages efficiently and without the timeline of a comprehensive plan.

Not sure whether your matter calls for a cost projection or a full life care plan? We can help you determine the right approach.

Our process

Streamlined, rigorous, and efficient

Our 5-step process delivers a clear and reliable cost estimate through a focused methodology. The same clinical standards as our comprehensive plans, in a condensed format.

Virtual interview

A Certified Life Care Planner conducts a focused virtual interview with the individual to understand their functional limitations, current treatment, and the practical impact of their injury on daily life. The virtual format allows for efficient scheduling without compromising the quality of clinical assessment.

Focused documentation review

Relevant medical records, diagnostic reports, and treatment notes are reviewed with a targeted lens, focusing on the specific areas of injury and the documented treatment trajectory. This efficient review ensures the report is grounded in clinical evidence without the exhaustive scope of a comprehensive plan.

Identification of future care needs

Based on the interview and documentation review, the planner identifies the specific future care needs arising from the injury, medical treatment, rehabilitation, equipment, and support services, within the defined scope of the matter.

Application of standardized costing methodology

Each identified need is costed using the ICHCC-certified Cost Projection methodology and recognized costing sources. This standardized approach ensures consistency, transparency, and methodological rigour across all cost estimates.

Abbreviated report preparation

The final report is prepared in a condensed format that clearly presents the identified care needs and associated cost projections. The report is suitable for use in settlement discussions but is not appropriate for trial.
